Signs are not houses
Signs describe styles of expression; houses describe areas of life in which chart factors are interpreted. The first house is not simply “Aries,” and the seventh is not simply “Libra.” Equating signs and houses can be a convenient teaching shortcut, but it erases differences between zodiac symbolism and local sky geometry.
House cusps depend on the birth time, location and chosen house system. When the time is unknown, house interpretations should be withheld.
The four angular houses
The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses begin at the chart's principal angles. The first concerns embodiment, approach and self-presentation. The fourth concerns roots, home and private foundations. The seventh concerns committed encounters and one-to-one relationships. The tenth concerns public responsibility, vocation and reputation.
These houses form two axes: self and other, private foundation and public direction. Reading the axis keeps the interpretation relational rather than one-sided.
The remaining houses
- Second: resources, possessions, skills and values.
- Third: learning, communication, siblings and the immediate environment.
- Fifth: creativity, play, pleasure, children and chosen risks.
- Sixth: work routines, service, maintenance and everyday health practices.
- Eighth: shared resources, obligation, inheritance, vulnerability and transition.
- Ninth: higher study, belief, publishing, law and long-distance travel.
- Eleventh: alliances, communities, audiences and future-oriented plans.
- Twelfth: retreat, hidden processes, confinement, contemplation and endings.
A planet is not trapped in one topic
A planet in a house brings its function into that life area, but interpretation must include the planet's sign, aspects and rulerships. Saturn in the second house may describe caution around resources, patient skill-building or a strong need for material structure. It does not automatically predict poverty. Venus in the tenth can support diplomacy or aesthetic work, but it does not guarantee fame.
Using houses responsibly
House symbolism is most useful for forming questions. What responsibilities are developing here? What patterns repeat? Which choices are available? Avoid converting a house placement into a frightening event prediction. Astrology should create language for reflection, not replace medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
